[nospaces] [attr="class","manalishi"] [attr="class","manalishil"] [attr="class","manalishiltop"] [attr="class","manalishiltopp"] [attr="class","manalishiltop2"]On the run.
[attr="class","manalishiltop3"]"Dammit."
[attr="class","manalishilpost"] Distant roars. Burning buildings. Students screaming. Those sounds filled Hidekis ears as he ran up the flights of stairs of one of the many office buildings that dotted the landscape of Training Ground Beta. A large, lifelike empty city designed to teach students how to use their quirks in a city environment and how to minimize collateral damage. He hadn’t expected it, but he supposed that was the point. Heroes should be prepared for anything. It was the students fault they hadn’t anticipated an attack. After all it had started out easily enough. A simple rescue mission from a burning building. Hideki, in his own opinion, had performed quite admirably. He must’ve rescued a dozen ‘civilians’ from the structure before Izanami attacked. [break][break]
She had come suddenly. Like a storm. Her wings beat against the air with ominous thumps. The building had strained to stay upright as her massive form landed on it, staring down at the students. Then she opened her maw, and the inside of her throat lit up with a violet hue before the purple flames jetted out of her mouth, aimed at the ‘heroes’ below. Hideki had acted quickly, throwing up his hands and projecting a large dome around the group of students to protect them. The flames bounced harmlessly off the shield, instead scorching the concrete around them. [break][break]
Izanami changed back to her human form, explaining the rules from her perch on high. The students were to run. Plain and simple. If they made it to the designated safety zone on the other side of the city they won. How they did that, she explained, was totally up to them. Anything was allowed, barring outright attacking other students. The only qualifier for failure was a thirty minute timer she had placed. If they didn’t make it to the zone in that time, or if she caught them, they failed. And as she began to change back into her draconic form the students scattered as another jet of flame rained down upon them, though Hideki hadn’t seen anyone get injured.[break][break]
That was twenty minutes ago. An announcement rang through the city with each student captured, stating their name and that they had been incapacitated. He had no doubt the other staff were watching. There were cameras all around the city after all. Ten minutes remained and Hideki had made it about halfway to the designated area. He had run into Izamani a couple of times, but she had been distracted by other students. Once she passed he had resumed his route, sticking to the tight alleyways and halls of the inside of buildings. [break][break]
His plan was simple. She was too large in her dragon form to fit into tight spaces. She could change back at will. But he knew he’d have a far better chance of getting away from her, if he did get caught, if she wasn’t transformed. Her strength came from her transformation. In her human form she was no tougher than anyone else. He was confident he’d at least be able to stun her long enough to escape if he got a good hit in.[break][break]
He was getting close to the next fire-escape he was going to use to make his way to the next building. The ominous thumps returned again. This time outside the walls of the building he was in. He stopped near the door. Breathing still steady he made sure to tune his ears to listen. They had stopped. Loud thuds against the ground rumbled through the walls as she took every step. But it was hard to tell where it was coming from. [break][break]
She was close. But where?[break][break]

Izanami was quite enjoying her villainous persona, which she had affectionately dubbed 'Blackwing.' When she first perched on the rooftop nearest her class, she was pleasantly surprised to see how quickly Hideki Masaru snapped into action. Summon his constructs, he'd managed to shield his comrades from the wrath of Dragon's flames. Granted, Izanami was hardly going full bore on her fire. It was roughly as hot as a campfire at present, a far cry from the steel melting blaze she could unleash at will. Not that it mattered much to the students, fire was fire, and they'd hardly know the difference if they got burned. Either way they'd be eliminated from the exercise and rushed off the infirmary to treat their wounds.
Soon enough the chase was one, and Blackwing took back to the skies, taunting her students as she rained down fire upon them. "FEEBLE HEROES... I WILL BURN YOU ALL TO CINDERS!" She roared loud enough to shatter the windows beneath her, shards of glass falling to the streets below. Izanami kicked off the rooftop, the structure buckling under the strength of her titanic bulk pulling itself back into the skies. Leathery wings beat in a heavy rhythm as the dragoness took to the skies once more, scanning the land beneath her like a hawk watching field mouse scatter. Her pupils were not fools, they knew all too well in the open they were sitting ducks. Izanami dive bombed low, crawls extended and jaws snapping as she raked through the scattered ranks. One claw met its mark, and she felt the struggling body of a student clutching tightly in one of her back paws. One down... a dozen to go.
What transpired afterwards was akin to a horror movie, with Izanami systematically hunting down her class one by one as they attempted to flee the training grounds. Most students scattered, relying only on themselves and moving through buildings or sewers to mask their presence. 'Blackwing' was wise to such tactics, and flushed them out like rats into her waiting jaws. A few stuck together, hoping safety in numbers would lead their way. They too failed, though not without a noble 'sacrifice' attempting to buy time for their partner to escape. Izanami found such bravery admirable, but to do so in a training course was a far cry from in the line of duty. Still, it meant her students were on the right path.
Twenty minutes passed, until one remained. Somehow Hideki had eluded her, hiding among the empty buildings as he moved about. By now he was near enough to the exit Izanami didn't risk toying with him further. Like a huntress she perched on a rooftop to catch her breath, surveying the land before her. A city park offered a death sentence of open ground, and no sewer ran beneath it. He would avoid that region like a no man's land. No, Hideki was in the surrounding apartment complexes somewhere. But where... Izanami leapt from the rooftop like a jungle cat as her wings unfurled and she began to glide slowly down the city's main street. Her head craning slowly from side to side, looking for anything out of the ordinary.
A flicker of movement out the corner of her eye caught her attention, a door closing on a building rooftop a block ahead. Izanami glided past, playing dumb until she knew she was out of sight. Once she knew she was hidden, the dragon latched onto the side of the nearest building like a bat clinging to the side of a tree. She clawed her way up the side, leaving deep claw marks in the walls and gashing the sides like a cat on a scratching post. Normally, she'd never do something so blatantly destructive, but in her Villain persona, Izanami was in character in not caring about collateral damage. Once on the roof she slunk across to the building she suspected Hideki of hiding in, moving as quietly her Dragon form allowed.
At last Izanami was in position, clinging to the side of the building where she suspected her quarry to be. A fire escape mounted on the building's side his most likely avenue down to the streets below. He was sticking to places her Dragon form could not reach. Smart, if not wrong. 'Blackwing' swung her head slowly around the corner of the building, her right eye gleaming as it peered through the windows like a violet dinner plate. Her pupil narrowed into a thin slit as she caught sight of her prey, leaned against the door trying to remain hidden. "I'VE FOUND YOU, INSECT!" The Dragon bellowed, letting out a hellish shriek of excitement. The windows near her mouth shattered from the piercing sound, and her tail swung out to slam into the fire escape, pulling hard on the metal structure until its mountings gave way. With a crash it fell to the ground below, crumbling at it impacted a dumpster. The sulfur stench of the dragon's breath filling the room as she peered at her prize; the cat had found her mouse. ๑

[attr="class","manalishiltop3"]"Dammit."
[attr="class","manalishilpost"] Each step grew louder as Izanami got closer. The neon lights overhead shook as the Dragoness climbed atop the building. Hideki froze, not wanting to alert her to his presense. But as he heard the clambering of claws on the side of the building, chunks of brick and mortar falling passed the windows in front of him he frowned. She had either gotten lucky, or had already known where he was. He suspected it was the former. She was a veteran Pro after all. He’d be a fool to underestimate her abilities. Eventually her visage was visible. Her face was facing towards the street below, but her reptilian eye peered into the room he was in, spotting him.[break][break]
She had found him. Her shrill pierced his ears, causing him to cover them in pain as he winced from the strain. But even with covered ears he could still make out the crashing of metal against metal to his right through the wall. If he had to wager a guess… she probably just wrecked the fire escape. Damn. After her shriek ended Hideki uncovered his ears, still staring at his sensei. His face betrayed his nervousness. Hideki wasn’t totally sure if he could escape her. How would he accomplish what so many other students failed to do? But on the outside he looked cool, calm, and collected. There wasn’t a hint of nervousness on his face at all.[break][break]
His blue eyes began to glow as he stared the dragon down. Raising his left arm, his left hand began to glow with the awesome power of the sun. In an instant a condensed ball of solar energy appeared, shining its condensed light right at his senseis eye. It was far brighter than any flashlight, and far more concentrated. It was like looking into a miniature star. Of course it wouldn’t cause her any permanent vision damage. Hideki wasn’t crazy. But it would hurt her eye like a bitch if she got caught by it, and probably blind it for a bit. "My power comes from the sun itself! Never stare at me for too long!"[break][break]
In that same moment he’d rush to the door, throwing it open and jumping out. There wasn’t a fire escape but Hideki didn’t care. His foot met air and he fell. Only for a moment, though, as his body was enveloped by a tightly held golden light around his form. His fall stopped and he flew towards the next building, ducking into a nearby ally. He hoped the lack of footsteps, as well as the light from the sun would mask his escape as he flew towards one of the more industrial sections of the city. He had a plan in mind… and he hoped she’d play into it.[break][break]

With her precarious position, Izanami had been unable to look away from Hideki fast enough. Though she turned her head aside as soon as he launched his blinding flash of light, Izanami's right eye took the brunt of the technique, being nearly blinded by the luminous attack. "INGRATE!" She howled in pain, nearly losing her footing as she clung upside down to the side of the building. Eyes watering, 'Blackwing' turned her gaze back inside the hallway, her mouth opening wide as fire filled her throat. The stench of sulfur grew before a stream of indigo fire leapt forth filling the room with flames. Immediately fire alarms sounded and sprinkler systems kicked on throughout the reproduction apartment complex, as black smoke billowed out through the previous destroyed windows.
But her response came too slow, and Izanami was able to catch the last glimpse of Sol as her student sprung into action, leaping out through the fire escape door. 'Quick thinking. He had a flashbang prepared for me, and even had time to throw out a quip.' Izanami said to herself, assessing the student's performance even as she recovered from his attack. With his Quirk she doubted a several story fall would truly slow Hideki down, he may even have found a rope or something to use as a tool in his descent. Izanami shifted her grip, turning her body ninety degrees so she could peer her head around the corner and see if she could catch a glimpse of her prey with her good eye. The dragon's left eye caught the last look of Sol as he dashed down an alley, and 'Blackwing' let out another roar, this time of frustration.
Izanami swung out a fist, punching out a sizable section of the brickwork of the building before climbing her way frantically back to the rooftop. Hideki had to keep heading west, it was the closest perimeter of the course and he didn't have the time to circle around and go a different way. He'd know this though, Izanami mused as she leapt from the roof of the burning building. Between her weight and the damage she'd inflicted to it with her climbing and her flames the already battered structure began to implode as its upper floors collapsed downwards on top of one another like macabre dominoes. As the black dragon took to the skies once more only a burning debris field was left in her wake, she took a moment to reflect on the hundreds that could have perished were that a real apartment bloc.
The great black dragon beat its wings and flew westwards into the industrial district of Test Site Beta. As she flew, Izanami listed to the left to give her good eye a wider angle to sweep. Her right eye she kept closed, it could only make out blurred shapes and colors presently. She needed be more careful moving about this region of the faux city. It lacked large buildings to latch onto, or flat rooftops to perch atop. Most of the buildings were mock factories and warehouses who's roof would never support her weight. Aside that was a tangled mess of pipes, power lines, and storage tanks. Though not filled with petroleum and gasoline, the tanks and their refineries were none the less still volatile. Izanami didn't wish to create a smokescreen to shield her final student on his push to the finish line with an errant jet of flames.
'Blackwing' moved to hover over a large factory smokestack that towered over most the structures in the industrial district. With the coil of her tail she crushed the top of the stack in on itself, concrete giving way to muscle and scales. The top of the smokestack plugged up with rubble, and the flow of smog from it slowed to a trickle. Only then did Izanami shift back into her human form for the first time in nearly half an hour. Landing gracefully, the black clad 'Villain' silently cursed her predicament. Her stomach growled in protest, her Dragon form increased her metabolic rate just as it did her size and mass. More importantly, her eye still watered and throbbed with pain, though now at least it was covered by her mane of violet hair.
'Where are you hiding Hideki?' Izanami mused to herself, scanning the streets below. Solar didn't grant him any superhuman physiology. He could move only as fast as normal person without the assistance of his Quirk. That was the problem, it was also a very adaptive Quirk, his constructs limited seemingly only by his own creativity. Izanami cast her gaze down to a manhole on the streets below. He could be in the sewers, though this portion of the city housed the water treatment plant. The current would sweep him north, and unless he used Solar to propel him through the murky waters Izanami doubted Hideki was swimming 'upriver.' She knew he could fly at decent speeds with his Quirk, though she'd both see and outrun him if he did. Even if he tried to dead sprint to the finish line, would he risk Izanami beating him in an overland race?
That left the buildings themselves. So many structures to sneak though. Pipes, vents, cargo elevators, industrial air conditioning units. He could be crawling through an empty water pipe past her as she speaks. Suddenly leveling the industrial district didn't seem such a bad idea. She could attempt a controlled burn of sorts, destroying and torching everything in the immediate vicinity between Hideki and the city perimeter. It would certainly be in character to rampage about and try to stop him. But Izanami doubted she had the time to, and even with less explosive gases she didn't want risk seriously harming her pupil if one of the large natural gas reservoirs detonated violently. Moreover, Sol could simply use her onslaught as a diversion to mount an escape while she was distracted with destruction.
For now, Izanami decided the best course of action was inaction. She still held most of the cards in their game of cat and mouse. Sol needed to go through her, not the other way around. He had at least a kilometer of heavily industrialized city to traverse in just under twelve minutes. She would wait, and see how the situation developed. It would give her eye another moment to rest, while she formulated a better plan. Izanami set a mental timer, if Sol was moving at the fastest speed she'd witnessed him travel at with his Quirk he'd pass her in under a minute. In one minute's time she'd act, whether she'd spotted him or not. Sometimes the most effectively strategy of the hunter is to wait, and let their prey come to them. ๑

[attr="class","manalishiltop3"]"Dammit."
[attr="class","manalishilpost"] Hideki breathed a sigh of relief as he floated through the air while looking back at the now crumbling apartments he left behind. He thought for a moment what might’ve happened if that had been a real apartment with real people. Hundreds dead. Dozens more injured from the building itself collapsing. People trapped in their cars under the rubble. The roadways blocked from the debris. He shook his head, clearing his mind of those thoughts. They were irrelevant to the situation at hand. Right now he had a test to pass. Izanami flew overhead once more, flying in the same direction Hideki was heading. Perfect. His gambit had worked. She had lost sight of him, at least for the moment.[break][break]
When he last saw her draconic visage she had been flying towards one of the giant smokestacks surrounding the complex. Not a bad vantage point. She’d be able to see the entire complex from up there. But without her larger dragon eyes it’d be harder to make out smaller details from a distance. That could give him an advantage and buy him a little time. He didn’t need much. As he touched down underneath the cover of pipes and steel overhead he surveyed his surroundings. The industrial complex was a veritable labyrinth of pipes, tanks, and ladders. It’d be hard for ‘Blackwing’ to fight here if she chose to go the route of using her quirk.[break][break]
Not that Hideki thought she could only rely on her quirk. If she was like him it was likely that she knew some form of fighting without the use of her quirk. More than likely it was martial arts. Weapons would be hard to keep track of with her quirk. And even harder to make sure they stayed on her costume in the first place. And Hideki was willing to bet she was better at hand to hand fighting than he was. She had more experience. And more practical experience, too. Hideki could practice his forms all day long but he’d never actually used them in a proper fight before outside of spars.[break][break]
Hideki kept floating low towards the ground, making sure to stay hidden away from open views. Moving at a steady 30mph through the halls of the complex he eventually came across a large truck park filled with flame retardant chemical spray trucks. Complete with hoses and fire extinguishers! That was exactly what Hideki needed. Grabbing one of the back-mounted extinguishers and strapping it on his back, Hideki would latch onto the side of the truck before projecting his Quirk again. [break][break]
His quirk would take the form of a small key and a hand and foot. The key would start the truck, the foot stepping on the gas and the hand steering as Hideki kept an eye on the skies from his perch against the passenger side of the truck. The truck pulled out of the gate, then once it had a clear shot to the clearing outside the industrial sector Hideki floored it, accelerating the truck as fast as it would move, heading towards the designated saftey zone.[break][break]
Hideki glanced back and forth between the road and the skies, ready to bail from the truck if needed and land safely. She wouldn’t be able to catch up so quickly that he wouldn’t be able to see her coming, even with her great speed.[break][break]

Izanami heard the roar of a diesel engine, and immediately knew something was up. There were no vehicles being 'driven' within the test sight. While it was populated with a realistic ratio of vehicles, there were no drivers. The woman growled aloud, gnashing her teeth as she turned around face to see one of the emergency response trucks taking off down the empty roads as fast as it could. "Hideki!" She said to herself, agitation in her voice as the 'Villain' took a running leap off the smokestack into a perfect swan dive. Once more she transformed in midair, body billowing into its enormous, draconic form as her wings sprouted from her back and unfurled to catch the air.
In her wrath, Izanami's tail swatted the base of the smokestack as she leveled off her dive, tending it crashing into the factory below. One eye closed, the other burning with rage as fire and cinders dripped from her gaping maw. She flew low to the ground, no longer orbiting high above like a bird of prey on the hunt. No, this was more akin to an owl diving from a tree towards an unsuspecting field mouse. The truck was fast, faster than Sol could have hoped to travel on his own. Izanami admired that aspect of this gambit, falling back on familiar technology when it exceeds the ability of a Quirk. Though the large squat truck was hardly a sports car, and the immense dragon accelerated faster than the industrial vehicle could. Propelled by the momentum of her dive, Izanami reached out her forelimbs, claws bared and ready.
At first she assumed Sol was simply driving the truck himself, which limited her options. She would not risk crashing the truck with her student inside it. Though once she saw he was merely handing on the outside, steering the vehicle with his Quirk, a fanged smile crossed scaled lips. 'Crafty.' The Dragon mused to herself. 'He did so in preparation of abandoning the vehicle.' With Hideki physically outside of the truck, he inadvertently made it a target. As Izanami drew close her arm reached out, clawed hand ripping off the driver's side door before grabbing a fistful of the front dash. Metal and plastic crunched between her fingers, as Izanami's claws sawed through the interior of the vehicle until she gave a sharp tug and pulled back with a handful of what was once the steering column and dash. She grinned at her pupil, as the vehicle he was riding alongside began to lose control and drift across the road.
As the truck began to wobble, Izanami slammed into its rear end with a shoulder check, causing the top heavy truck to roll end over end in a violent crash. It came to a half a half dozen revolutions later, burning and leaking fuel and fire suppressing foam in the middle of the faux roadway. Without the truck to accelerate him, Hideki's speed faltered in the wake of his teacher's, and Izanami surged past him until she reached the vehicle's broken wreckage. 'Blackwing' came to a grinding halt, digging her heels into concrete and coming to a stop besides the wreckage. She turned around, good eye locked on the would be Hero as she reared up on her hind legs to stand upright. One foot stomped down on top of the wrecked truck, causing it to leak more fluids from the added pressure of her weight.
"Give up Hero, you've lost!" Izanami commanded Sol, her tail trashing hard against the roadbed behind her. "I captured all your little friends... What made you think I wouldn't capture you too?" The dragon clenched one hand into a fist, letting out a throaty belly laugh. "Did you really think you could escape me with a car?" The head huge of the creature leaned forward, and two sharp jets of black smoke flared from her nostrils. Izanami knew she could just declare herself the winner at this point. It wouldn't take much effort to just rush Sol and overwhelm his constructs with her superior strength. But Villains were known for their megalomaniac complexes, some had an almost compulsive need to gloat and monologue. It was their way of taking credit for deeds and actions that may otherwise go unnoticed. More importantly, Izanami wanted to see what Hideki did with his last few precious moments. He several minutes left on the clock, with only a sixty foot long twenty three ton fire breathing reptile between him and escape, Do or Die, the Shiketsu way. ๑

It wasn’t long until he saw Izanami perform a swan dive off the smoke-stack she’d been sitting on. He frowned. He had hoped he’d have been able to get at least a little further before she spotted him, but he supposed that would’ve been hoping too much. She changed into her dragon form again, bullet diving down to the truck. She didn’t manage to catch up to him until just before he was at the exit gate, latching onto the side of the truck and moving to take out its driving column and steering wheel. In that moment Hideki dispersed his constructs, leaping off the vehicle and wrapping himself in his skin-tight construct armor again, taking to the skies once more. [break][break] He flew as fast as he could to the truck, as it wrecked, landing about twenty feet from it as the dragoness stood tall, taunting him. Hideki kept his stone faced facade, not showing any signs of fear whatsoever. She may have had him cornered but actual pros had come back from worse. He’d seen his mother do so dozens of times over the years. He looked up at the towering dragon, who was claiming that he had lost. She asked if he thought outrunning her in a car would work. He shrugged. “Figured it was my best shot. It was either that or let you hunt me down like a mouse trapped in a cage.” He let out a sigh, purposefully trying to sound defeated as best he could.[break][break] Throwing his arms forward and meeting his hands together at his wrists, he aimed both his palms up towards her face. “I was hoping I’d never have to use this part of my quirk.” What looked to be golden electrical sparks shot up his arms as a small golden orb appeared in his hands. “This was a trump card I was hoping to save for use at one of the licensing exams. Never thought I’d have to use it in my first lesson.” The orb was slowly getting bigger and bigger. “I can do more than make constructs. Wanna see?” He hoped she’d play along. After all, Villains liked to prove how superior they were, right?[break][break] Light pulsed around his arms, as if he were charging up a vast amount of energy. If Izanami entertained this little show, Hideki would smirk, before winking at her. “Sike!” Before he aimed the orb down again, a small construct shooting out towards the wrecked car like a bullet. It struck the underside of a metal sheet, rebonding off it and making a large spark. The spark hit the leaked gas, and the whole truck went up in a small explosion![break][break] It would hardly be enough to damage the dragoness, but that wasn’t the point. The wreck began billowing ash black smoke, the entire truck having gone up in almost an instant. In the instant her vision would be blinded Hideki would cut the straps of the fire extinguisher he had on his back, using a construct to fly it behind the dragoness while she was distracted. If the dragoness stepped forwards to get clear of the smoke Hidekis arms would be at his sides. “Well, that was disappointing.” Another act, still. [break][break] Small arms would form out of the construct he on the fire extinguisher, making sure to keep it out of the line of sight of Izanamis good eye. As it got behind her head it would suddenly jerk to the left, the arms holding the nozzle and trigger of the extinguisher. Hideki would press down on the trigger, unleashing a pressurized white cloud at her remaining eye from behind, hoping to blind her again.[break][break] Assuming this worked Hideki would take off again while she was distracted, flying beneath the dragonesses legs and making one last dash for the exit. He was lucky the smoke wouldn't bother him due to the barrier his quirk created around him while he was flying, and he hoped the burning truck would cover his sounds.[break][break] [attr="class","manalishirnote"] [attr="class","manalishirnote1"]EXTRA NOTES [attr="class","manalishirnote2"] [attr="class","manalishirnote3"] [attr="class","manalishirnote4"] [attr="class","manalishirnote5"]

The dragon leaned forward, listening intently to the words of its quarry standing before her. She scowled, annoyed that her student was apparently giving up so easily. This was not the Shiketsu Do-or-Die way, and it visibly irritated the dragon. She stomped harder on the wrecked chassis of the fire engine at her feet, its metal frame groaning against the added strain. 'You thought right, though the results are lacking.' Izanami said to herself, snorting out another jet out smoke from her nostrils.
Her disappointment soon turned to silent anticipation, when Hideki announced he had some as of yet unseen technique. Izanami's curiosity was struck, as she reveled in seeing her students' Quirks tested to the fullest extent of their abilities. With the adaptability of Solar, anything seemed possible. The dragoness narrowed her gaze and allowed the teen a chance to prepare his Super Move. Were this a real battle, she would have flattened him with her tail the moment he muttered in self pity about being trapped. When Hideki asked if Izanami wished to see, she simply snorted and shifted her stance slightly. She did, though as 'Blackwing' she could care less what a Hero could do, so long as he was beaten. It was important not to break character or risk de-legitimizing the training.
When Hideki shouted 'Sike', Izanami instinctively assumed he would attempt another blinding attack on her good eye. She raised an arm to shield her eyes from the flash... only for the attack to never come. "Nani!?" She muttered as her eye glanced down, catching sight of the projectile as it sparked the underside of the wreckage. 'Of course...' She thought to herself as the heat of vehicle's fuel leak igniting washed over her. It didn't hurt beyond an irritating sting, but it had given her pause. Izanami stepped forward as her lumbering frame emerged from the dense plumes of rolling smoke. Her mouth opened wide to unleash another jet of violet flames, only for something to stop her in her tracks.
A blast of white foam struck her good eye, momentarily blinding her as she roared in surprise. A fire extinguisher!? But from where? Her mind quickly pieced together the student's ploy. The truck, the spark, the extinguisher, planned ahead or improvised it mattered little now. 'Very clever...' Izanami thought to herself, swatting aside the extinguisher with one hand as her other rubbed fire repellent out of her eye. It stung fiercely, and she'd need visit an eye wash station in the nurse's office after this was all through.
She knew this was it, Hideki's last ditch attempt at escape. Twice she'd failed to give him credit, and twice he'd temporarily blinded her to buy himself an escape. Izanami hadn't heard which way Sol took off in, though she knew well his only avenue of escape lay due west of her. The Dragon turned around swiftly, reaching down and digging her claws into the burning wreckage of the crashed truck behind her. She heaved with all her might, twisting her body around and sending the wreck hurtling forward towards the exit. It skid across the ground like a battering ram. Leaving in its wake a trail of burning fuel and spilled foam, and carving gashes in the roadbed where jagged steel cut into concrete. It made a truly awful sound, but it was Izanami's last ditch attempt to stop her quarry from escaping.
After launching the flaming wreck of the truck at Hideki, Izanami took off running towards the exit way on all fours. She wouldn't risk flying while still nearly blinded. Her right eye had ironically become her 'good' eye for the moment, and she unleashed a stream of violet flame at anything resembling movement in her forward field of vision. A moment later a siren sounded throughout Test Ground Beta, a buzzer signalling the end of the allotted time for the training exercise. Izanami stopped dead in her tracks, head glancing up towards the nearest siren as she huffed and exhaled smoke from her nose. A moment later and the Dragon had shifted back into the curvaceous form of a woman in her familiar black armor.
Izanami reached into her belt for some eye drops and a handkerchief. When her vision cleared up she found herself standing only a hundred meters shy of the training ground's western exit. The burnt wreck of the truck lay partially embedded in the thick concrete wall that marked the perimeter. Now just one question remained on her mind; had Hideki Masaru escaped at the last possible moment, or had he fallen short of victory by mere seconds? "Time's up..." Were her only words. ๑

Yes! His ploy had worked! She had, on instinct, moved to protect her eye from a flashbang that was never going to come. That had bought Hideki the instant he needed to execute his plan and make his escape. Dipping between her legs and moving westward he glanced back behind him and saw the wreckage of the truck he’d procured earlier flying over his head, having been thrown by Izanami again. He flew low to the ground making sure to stay out of the way of the incoming wreckage.[break][break] She was gaining on him. She’d catch up, soon, if he didn’t think of something. She hadn’t been stunned as long as he liked, shaking off the pain and chasing after him like she did. But when she opened her maw to spew flames Hideki had an idea. He grinned and turned around, throwing his hands towards her mouth. A golden bubble of energy surrounded him as the violet flames slammed into him. It was just like when he first started this exam.[break][break] Only this time the flames were pushing against him in the air, as opposed to the ground. They were moving his construct far faster than he could’ve done on his own! Pressed against the side of the bubble and doing his damndest to stay focused on maintaining it he rocketed off with the force of the flames all the way to the exit gate! He could see the large billboard at the end signalling he only had a few seconds left![break][break] He flew through the exit gate, crashing into the dirt and mud on the outside of the city zone. His construct shattered on impact, sending Hideki tumbling through the dirt and grass until he slowly came to a halt. The other students who’d been escorted to the exit watched with anticipation, rushing over to him to help him up. Looking at the timer it had paused when Hideki had passed through it, signalling his success. He’d had half a second left.[break][break] The class erupted into cheers! They’d been watching the fight from a large projector aimed at the wall on the outside of the city that had been showcasing their fight. To most of them Izanami seemed an impossible wall. A mountain far too big for any of the students to even attempt to climb. But Hideki had kept his composure and that dedication had earned his classmates respect. A few came over and helped Hideki to his feet, brushing off the dirt and grass that had gotten onto his uniform.[break][break] “Thanks.” He replied. It was only now that he realized just how much he was sweating. The mental strain from using his quirk was beginning to set in now that his adrenaline was subsiding. He felt tired. Like he needed a nap. He walked up to the archway that he’d passed through to pass and leaned against the right pillar, resting his body against it.[break][break] He was smiling. Though his sensei seemed less than pleased. When she approached he waved at her, nervously laughing. “Sorry about your eyes, sensei. I couldn’t think of any other ways to get past you.”[break][break] [attr="class","manalishirnote"] [attr="class","manalishirnote1"]EXTRA NOTES [attr="class","manalishirnote2"] [attr="class","manalishirnote3"] [attr="class","manalishirnote4"] [attr="class","manalishirnote5"]

Dragon Queen blinked repeatedly, the eye drops felt like droplets of heaven on her now bloodshot eyes. When her vision finally returned she was finally able to clearly see the aftermath of what had transpired. To her dismay her metal projectile had missed its mark, "It always hooks to the right..." She said to herself as she shook her head at her poor aim. More importantly, there he stood, Hideki himself, on the far side of the perimeter gate being congratulated by his peers. All smiles and cheers, her students were, though their teacher remained stone faced and solemn as ever as she slowly walked towards them. As she walked, the woman rolled her arms and popped her neck. Her human form had completely different proportions than her Dragon form. It always left Izanami a bit stiff after spending prolonged periods using her Quirk.
When Hideki spoke, Izanami tried not to show her irritation, it was all directed solely at herself anyways. In truth she was quite proud of her student, he showed quick thinking under pressure. The woman shook her head no, waiting until she had the class' attention before she began to speak. "Don't apologize to me for doing what you needed to Masaru. You were outmatched, and had an objective to achieve. You did what you needed to in order to both protect yourself, and complete the trial you had been tasked with." Izanami folding her arms crossed beneath her massive bust as she spoke, her tone stern authoritative. "Were it a real battle, with life and death stakes, I expect you all to employ such 'underhanded' tactics if it means survival."
Izanami cleared her throat, she had a lot of speaking yet to do. "Villains are not like us, they abide by no law but their own code. They will not pause to harm, cripple, or kill should they feel the desire to. Were I an actual Villain there would be shame in doing everything in your power to escape once it was clear the civilians had been evacuated and I could not be defeated even by your combined efforts. Cities can be rebuilt, roads can be repaved, but we can never bring back the lives lost. I hope you all take that to heart." Izanami's bloodshot violet eyes wandered over her class, studying their faces. Some clearly understood this message, others still struggled with the idea of 'fighting dirty.' It was the first lesson of many, they would learn in time.
"Now, ideology aside let me discuss the actual results of today's Battle Trial. Firstly I want to congratulate you all for the rescue portion of the trial. I saw good examples of leadership from a few of you, overall you directed your efforts well and worked at high efficiency, and you all acted in a calm, cool and collected manner. However, given this was only rescuing mannequins from an apartment fire, I'm almost unimpressed. You performed very well as a group, at what the curriculum would consider an absolutely entry level task. Your trials to come will be much, much harder, and by the end of the semester I'll have you all wishing you could go back to rescuing glorified crash test dummies from a burning building."
Izanami paused to breath, seeing the looks of disappointment and listening to the groans and protests from her class. If they really thought she would be impressed with loading mannequins onto an ambulance, she could point them to promising careers working at a clothing store. "Now, as for the second portion of our trial. The 'battle' portion, and I use that term loosely. As you all know, all of you were captured or incapacitated with the sole exception of Hideki Masaru."
Izanami's arm gestured out to the student as he leaned against a pillar. "I realize some of the results are luck based. You couldn't have known who I'd target first, and those of you with Quirks that do not assist in your mobility or ability to hide were at a severe disadvantage. Life is not fair, neither are Villains, but there are still things that can be done to minimize risks and maximize safety. I will be covering that in the rest of this week's lectures. I'll need you all the read chapters 1 and 2 of the course textbook 'Overwhelming Odds: Retreats & Reinforcements' by tomorrow's class."
Many of the students groaned audibly at their teacher finding a way to shoehorn their homework into her lecture. One very fiery violet glare though silenced her detractors. "As I was saying. I did see a lot of good things about there. I saw solid reaction times and snap decision making when I launched my initial attack. Good to know I have no 'deer in the headlights' in Class 1-A... those never make it far in my curriculum. Problems I did see. Many of you diverted back into a yourself above all others mentality. I saw a few of you go so far as to try and use your companions as bait while you hid and waited to make a break for it. This is not the entrance exams. You are not a bunch of competitors all vying for spots on some pointless leader board. Out here on the Training Grounds you are real Heroes, acting on real Missions. It is not Free for All, it is All for One, am I understood?"
There were some sheepish nods, as well as some vocal agreement from her students. "You need to start thinking of your class as a unit. On this Battle Trial you were a team working towards a common goal: rescuing civilians. When I attacked, you were still a team. That is what I am most disappointed in. I saw far too much selfishness, not enough selflessness. There was no attempt to form a coordinated strategy to deal with me, or minimize your own casualties. Just rats fleeing a sinking ship. I teach Heroes, not opportunists." This was the crux of her own anger, a disappointment her class had devolved back to their entrance exam style 'every man for himself' approach to results. Out there in the real world Pro-Heroes were brothers in arms, her students needed to start acting like that if they were ever going to make headway.
Not willing to end her lecturing on an negative note, Izanami turned her attention back to Hideki. "Now, lastly. Let us discuss young Masaru here. He was the sole 'survivor' of this exercise. What did he do right? What did he do wrong? What could he do better?" These questions were all rhetorical, Izanami simply continued speaking. "Masaru, you demonstrated first and foremost quick thinking under pressure. You were one of, if not the only selfless gesture during this whole ordeal. Using your Quirk to shield your companions from my flames on my initial attack. You could easily have chosen to shield only yourself, but you did not. You moved using only the alleyways, side streets, and building interiors unless you couldn't avoid it. Identifying your opponent's limitations is almost as useful a skill as knowing your own. Playing to your advantage will go a long way in this profession, and a keen mind for strategy is invaluable in the chaos of battle."
"Additionally, you displayed an adept usage of your Quirk. Granted, you do have one of the more versatile Quirks of your peers during the trial. Regardless, you used Sol in defensive, offensive, mobility, and utility capacities. You demonstrated both strong fundamentals and adept levels of control. Some of you could learn a thing or two about that, which is why Quirk Control will be a major component of next week's lessons." Izanami's eyes wandered to the problem students on that topic, they knew who they were. She smirked slightly, before returning to her lecture.
"Now, what could Masaru do better? Well, firstly, while it was admirable he protected his fellow classmates initially, he also used their capture to his advantage. On several occasions I caught you out the corner of my eye, hiding in the shadows or making a break for it as I bore down on your fellow classmates. You made no offer to help them, using their sacrifices only to further your own goals. Were this a real battle, we are expected to do everything in our power to ensure no one gets left behind." Izanami knew that statement was an impossible goal, but officially Shiketsu could not legally teach children to sacrifice their lives. Heroes were civil servants, not soldiers.
Izanami relaxed her posture, arms falling to her sides as her lecture came to a close. "So in closing, Class 1-A performed well during the rescue portion. Though between the extremely low survival rate and the lack of overall cooperation or coordination during the battle portion, I am unimpressed by today's results. Individual grading will be finished by the end of your next class and posted online. Now, let's head back to the classroom so you aren't late to lunch; a good diet is important for maintain a heroic physique." While true, the reality was Izanami was absolutely famished following the trial and didn't wish to miss out on any of her own lunch break. "You're more than welcome to ask any questions on today's exercise on our walk back." Izanami at last gave her class a warm smile, and walked through their ranks to take her lead at the head of the class. Following her cue Class 1-A began to make the long walk back towards the main Shiketsu campus. ๑
