Character Progression
There is some importance to understanding the generalities of progression in a "statslite" system like Polaris. The general understanding of where you'll fall in the world is really important in order to properly play your character. Every faction has a series of five tiers. This starts at "Tier I" and over the course of your story you'll inevitably become a Tier V.
These tiers are simply denoted as "Faction I" or "Faction III" etc. The only exception to this being with heroes. Heroes have two paths. You can either start as a young burgeoning rookie that didn't go to one of the more prestigious schools as a "Hero I" or you can be a student at "Student I". Students have tiers I and II. After that point they'll need to move forward into a Hero III in order to continue their growth. The below section will give you an idea of where we imagine each rank to be.
Tier I. People at Tier I are new to their faction. While prior they may have been around, this is the start of their journey. Whether it's day one at U.A. or their first time picking a pocket. This is where they start. The shortest of the tiers but the most populated if all goes well. [Free]
Tier II. At this rank, you're considered an amateur. That's a little bit better than being a beginner but you're still nothing too crazy. While you may be the best in your class in terms of skill and performance you're still not to the level you dream of. [1,000 RP]
Tier III. At this rank, you're a threat to other factions. The people below you look up at you in awe. The people above you view you as an up-and-coming. You're moving up in the world. As a Hero, you are now eligible to become a teacher. [4,000 RP]
Tier IV. At this rank, you're a true blown professional. You're (in)famous. You're a household name. People scream (whether in fear or excitement) as you go by. You have dedicated fans that know everything about you. [16,000 RP]
Tier V. At Tier V you've finally completed the journey. At this point you're one of the top heroes, one of the most wanted villains, one of the most feared vigilantes, or someone's favourite news anchor. Regardless... This is societal peak. [32,000 RP]
So, what about interfaction movement? Well, you can move as the plot would lead to or from any faction. The only exceptions are becoming a hero or civillian. You may only move into the student ranks before Tier III. If your character becomes a Tier III villain, vigilante, or civillian, you can never become a Pro Hero. You may only move into civilian from Vigilante or Villain before reaching Tier III as well.
So now that we know which tiers are which how do we achieve a tier up?
Well, every tier has a listed cost in RP beside them. This RP is earned just by making posts. You gain 20 RP from writing a reply. You gain 30 RP from your first post in a thread, sadly it'll only generate 20 there so if you need your first post reward let a staffer know and we'll increase it. RP is also used to strengthen your Talents and Quirk. Which will be detailed on more focused rules page.
Beyond that, we don't want you to rush to the next tier. We ask that you take your time, there is no reason to rush from tier to tier. If it feels like you're trying to game the system and rush the ranks we will deny your rank up. Our rough estimations from tier to tier vary. If you want to know if a staff member thinks you've done enough to warrant a tier up feel free to ask us and we'll let you know.
Once you've spent the point and you've been given the go ahead, then we need a Promotion Arc.
Promotion Arcs are simple.
These are a series of three threads that are major to your character and explain their rise to prominence. Characters that are not ranking up can be involved in your promotion arc. On the same front, you can also complete your promotion arcs together with a team of other characters!
